Choosing a Baby Changing Bag

For parents, the days of travelling light are a distant memory! Even popping to the shops means taking a number of ‘just in case’ items with you. A well organised, sturdy baby changing bag can make life so much easier.   Whilst any bag of the right size could be used, the advantage of the specially designed baby bags is that they usually have added features designed to make finding the things you need quicker and easier.  Most also include a foldaway changing mat making nappy changing easy and hygienic, wherever you are.

Your changing bag needs to be spacious enough to carry all the essentials such as nappies, wipes and creams a change of clothes, bottles and dummies - but items need to be easily found.  There is little more frustrating than rummaging around a large bag trying to find something, particularly if you need it in a hurry!  It also needs to be easy and comfortable to carry.

Something that designers have now recognised as important is that it should look good too.  Gone are the days where only frumpy, quilted changing bags are available (thank goodness!) and Mummies can stay feeling glam and yummy.  There are also many unisex bags around so Daddies have been considered too.

Baby changing bags come in several styles such as backpack or shoulder bag style.  Maternity holdalls can be useful for organising all the essentials for your hospital trip.  The beauty with these is that they can later serve as a weekend bag for travelling with baby.

With so many to choose from, to help you buy, you might want to consider the following:

Changing mat:  a baby bag that includes a changing mat means you can find somewhere suitable to change your baby’s nappy almost anywhere.
Separate compartments: really help with organising and retrieving baby’s things.  Also helps separate items such as dirty bibs and clean clothes.
Insulated bottle pocket:  a useful feature for keeping bottles and food cool.
Washable or wipe-clean lining: you need to be able to clean your bag easily as being a parent can be a messy business!
Mesh or see-through pockets:  these can be useful for finding items more easily.
Style:  consider your lifestyle. For example, if you walk a lot a backpack style may suit.  Also consider if you want a unisex bag for Dad to share.
